The Suddenly

When we hear this word suddenly, I think there is a great expectation of Joy and excitement, we know that God moves in the suddenly.

Then suddenly the prison doors opened, suddenly an angel of the lord appeared to Mary, suddenly there came a sound like a mighty rushing wind, suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts.

In the word, we can see that God moves in the suddenly.

These are all so exciting, but what about the suddenly that we never expected which does not bring great joy and excitement. The sudden calamity or sudden expectation that was not met, sudden disappointment, sudden betrayal, sudden loss?

What do we do when we experience the suddenly that we never thought would happen, and it hurts us?

The only way I can describe it is like someone standing on a rug, and it gets ripped out from under their feet when they least expect it. When something you have been standing on gets ripped a way you fall, and sometimes you fall hard.

You weren’t expecting it, you never saw it coming, and now you are on the ground and winded. No, it’s not to say God caused this, could be the enemy, could be life it’s a fallen world. It could have been our own actions or the actions of others that caused it, knowingly or unknowingly, but what do we do when it happens? How do we cope with the sadness of a sudden loss, sudden change, sudden unexpected situation we now have to face?

When we fall, the first thing most of us will do is blame someone or something. It happened in the garden of Eden when Eve blamed the snake and Adam blamed Eve, we are always looking for a scapegoat.
Over and over the thoughts swirl around in our head this would not have happened if……
We blame others, we blame ourselves and some of us even blame God. After blame, the first emotion we might experience is anger. Why did this happen, why did I lose that, why did this change?

The Bible says we must be slow to anger (James 1 19-20); we are fools when we have rage (Prov 29:11); turn from anger it leads to evil (Psalm 37 8-9); in your anger do not sin and do not let the sun go down while you are still angry (Eph 4:26)

The opposite of anger is to be patient and loving, kind with self-control. These are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The way we overcome anger is to pray and ask God to help us, be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we have more patience, and to walk in forgiveness. Now if you have ever felt uncontrollable anger this is easier said than done. It takes time, it takes work, and it takes persistence. Meditate daily on the word of God showing how evil anger is, this will transform your mind and set you free as you continue to walk with the Holy Spirit. As you walk with the Holy Spirit you will bear more fruit of patience and self control.

After the anger comes the hurt. Once the initial shock is over it feels like you have adrenalin pumping through your body, the anger subsides and then you realize you are on the ground, and you are sore. It hurts where you fell, and you naturally focus on the pain.

This is where we need to be very careful. Wounds untreated become infected.
If we cannot allow God to heal us from our hurt, we become bitter and offended. We all know that unforgiveness can lead to bitterness. The word of God calls us to be compassionate towards one another and forgiving just as Jesus forgave us (Ephesians 4:23), forgive and we will be forgiven (Luke 6:37) There is great importance and power in forgiveness. If we do not forgive, we will not be free to move forward into the purpose and plan that God has for us.

How do we forgive and allow that hurt to heal?

We pray.

Pray for those who we feel hurt us, knowingly and unknowingly, pray for ourselves and we pray for the holy Spirit to heal us. The bible says Jesus will heal our broken heart and our crushed spirit. (Psalm 34:18) (Psalm 147:3)
Jesus heals us when we call on him, and when we pray for others, it enables us to forgive.

How do we get back up to our feet after being hurt?
You see the enemy would like to cripple you so that you are ineffective for God’s work and His kingdom. Permanently take you out by giving up, but we are a persistent people who persevere and push through! Often you get loved ones or friends who come along side you, to reach out their hand, and help you to your feet as God sends them.
Sometimes you sit there waiting, and it feels like no one shows up and no one cares, no one understands how you feel.
In these precious moments I want to encourage you, God is there, and Jesus will raise you up. He wants your undivided attention and your focus so that you know it is Him, Jesus your Saviour, who healed and strengthened you.

I often think of King David when he was at his lowest, the word says that he Encouraged himself in the Lord (1 Samuel 30 6-8). Not YouTube, Netflix, friends, food etc but in the LORD!

Psalm 42:11
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.

David in the midst of difficulties he faced found strength in God alone.

So when we are down, we encourage ourselves in the Lord. How?
By spending time in his presence. His presence is everything. It’s beautiful, it heals, delivers and sets us free. Spend time in His presence with prayer, worship and reading the word. God sees where you are and there is nothing too great for Him to help you with.
Encourage yourself in the promises of His word. Remind yourself over and over of His promises in that situation and for the prophetic promises over your life. You will not stay where you are, but you will get back up.

Proverbs 24:16
For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.

Psalm 145:14
The Lord sustains all who fall
And raises up all who are bowed down.

Psalm 3:3
But You, O Lord, are a shield about me,
My glory, and the One who lifts my head.

Once you get back to your feet again, be mindful of fear.
When we have been hurt in life by something unexpected, it’s not easy to trust again, or try again. We feel that’s is safer and a lot better to shrink back and protect ourselves from pain, especially once we have healed. After loss, a significant change, unexpected turn, we say that we will never try that again, or trust again, because it hurt. This is a life half lived.

The antidote for fear is FAITH.

Trusting that as we sit with Jesus, he will lift us to our feet to move forward once again.
We know that HE is with us and knowing this will enable us to move forward in courage. The faith we have in God’s promises will drown out fear, perfect love casts out fear. When we get a revelation of the love of God, how can we be afraid? He has promised to never leave us, never forsake us and to bring us through victoriously at every side.
Will we fall again? Probably. Will we get hurt again? More than likely. Will we experience a suddenly that was not anticipated. I believe so. The key is what we learn from each fall, how we respond to each suddenly in faith, and how we recover by allowing Jesus to strengthen us. When we get back up we win!

Jesus will restore and save you.

1 Peter 5:10
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

Romans 10:11
The Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will never be ashamed.”

Now up you get, and forward you go!
