A few years ago I shared a message called the fire of God. During this season of my life, I was walking in the fire of God. I felt so much passion, energy and vigour for the things of God. My heart was alive for God and my focus not swayed but only on Him.
Luke 3:16
John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But the one is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
This verse goes on to share how Jesus will come to Judge the earth.
When reading this verse, it made me think of the word FIRE.
What do you think of when you hear the word FIRE?
Bright, blazing, passionate, powerful, wild, fierce!
Revelation 3:15-16
“I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So because you are lukewarm— neither hot nor cold— I am about to vomit you out of My mouth!”
We are NOT called to be lukewarm.
It is ALL or nothing, no half measures.
Our walk with God should represent a burning, flaming fire, passionate and fierce.
In the message I had shared that our walk with God must be alive and fierce. Our God is an all consuming fire and His words are like fire (Hebrews 12: 28-29). The message spoke about the fire of Judgment and how Jesus will come back to judge the earth and many will be thrown into the eternal fire of hell (Matthew 25:31-46). There is also the refining fire of God where we are tested and tried to prove our faith which is more valuable than gold (1 Peter 1:7) and lastly the flame that is alive with in us, God’s Spirit and His gift He has given to us. (2 Timothy 1:6). The message confirmed that we needed to protect this flame that God had given to us, but for many the storms of life come like a gust of wind and take out our flame.
While preaching this message I had thought that I had already gone through the refiners fire, but I had no idea of what was still to come. I could stand and preach about being on fire because my heart was blazing. I was at that time fighting a battle but this one kept me close to God and made my walk stronger. It was fuel to my fire and made me pursue Him with a greater intensity. Standing there I had never lost my flame. The winds and storms of life had not blown out my fire.
Fast forward a few years and I found myself in a similar position to the brothers and sisters I had thought I was “preaching” to. The storms of life had come like a gust of wind and blown out the flame. Back then, if you had told me this could have happened I would not have believed you. Through the battle I had prayed for the burden to go, the burden to see the lost saved, the burden to see others on fire for God, the burden to see the miraculous healing power of God. How could I teach and pursue what God has called me to when I was in the midst of a battle? I had stopped pursuing my calling and my eyes were on the fight and not on my Heavenly Father. I had forgotten the promise I had made to go where He calls me to and do what He has asked me to do.
And just like that I woke up and it was gone.
No passion, no fire, no burden. Just what felt like a “normal” life. Not waking up every day with anticipation and excitement to see how greatly God was going to move that day and in the lives of others. The heavy burden that makes you cry to see others so far from God. With the fire gone, I started to walk in the flesh and the battle caused me to walk in anger, bitterness and unforgiveness. Everything I knew that was not of God and not the fruit of the Spirit of God.
So what do we do now, when we feel like the fire is gone, we have lost our zeal and passion for the things of God?
What do we do when the storms of life come like a gust of wind to take out our flame?
1. We confess our sin…
We need to repent and turn back to God. Confess our sin and walk away from anything that separates us from God. It is God’s kindness that leads us to repentance and in repentance we live a life bearing much fruit. We must put away the desires of the flesh and walk in the Spirit. We repent from loving who He is and to do this we must know who our God is. Seek Him and you will find Him.
2. Run to God…
Run with everything that you have. Run into the shelter of the most high so that He can shelter you and protect that flame. He will shelter you from the storms of life. Get fierce. Read your bible MORE. Worship MORE. Attend every prayer meeting you can and get the elders of the church to pray with you! Pray in the Spirit. Wait on the Lord and declare His faithfulness and His goodness continually.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)
“but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
3. Fan the flame…
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” (2 Timothy 1:6)
Start using those gifts God has placed within you. Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stand up, dust your self off and get back on course to run the race set before you. God will empower you as you trust and lean on Him.
4. Serve the Lord…
“Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord.” (Romans 12:11-13)
Serve the Lord with your life and all of your heart. Serve the Lord with your time. Ask, seek and pray and ask How you can serve the Lord? Then be obedient. Surrender to His call on your life. Firstly answer the call to be in relationship with God through His son Jesus. Secondly He has a job for you to do here on earth, get going!
You are set apart, called out and for this reason God has given you the promised gift of His Holy Sprit. We are called to be blazing and fierce. Fire is contagious and it brings light and warmth, let this be a reflection of your walk with Jesus.
I leave you with this, one of my favorite quotes of all time –
“Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.” John Wesley.
May we set ourselves on fire so others will watch us burn for Jesus!
“His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.” (Revelation 19:12)
Do you have His fire in your eyes?
